How to check and renew Nordic safety cards and welder certificates

Maintaining valid safety credentials and professional certificates is critical for cross-border industrial projects in the Nordic region. If a worker's safety cards, welder qualifications, or work permits expire, operations halt immediately and compliance risks rise.

Industrial contractors must track and renew these credentials systematically to prevent costly site delays. Employers must coordinate timely safety renewals, verify welder certificates, and track regional permit rules to maintain active site access and ensure legal compliance.

The SSG Entre Basic course changed its name to SSG Entre Contractor Safety on May 20, 2026, to establish clarity in the international market. This online course is currently required for access at more than 300 industrial sites across the Nordic region. The training takes approximately 3 hours to complete and is available in 18 languages to accommodate cross-border workforces. Passing this safety course grants a qualification that remains valid for exactly 3 years.

The physical SSG Access card itself no longer has a limited period of validity. Previously, the SSG Access card had a limited validity period of five years, but SSG removed this restriction. The card now remains active indefinitely, as long as the holder has valid courses registered on it. This change simplifies administrative tracking for companies managing multiple workers across different Nordic sites.

To avoid access disruptions, the contracting firm's administrator receives a reminder before an SSG course qualification expires. This notification prompts the administrator to purchase and assign a new course so the worker can retake the training. Managing these renewals on time ensures that the physical SSG Access card remains active and the worker retains immediate site access.

Under the EN ISO 9606-1 standard, a welder's qualification period begins on the exact date they weld the test piece. This start date is valid only if the required testing is completed with acceptable results. To keep this qualification active, the employer or welding coordinator must confirm every six months that the welder has worked within their range of qualification. If the employer fails to sign the certificate every six months, the certificate immediately becomes invalid.

Clause 9.3a provides the first renewal pathway. Under Clause 9.3a, the welder's qualification remains valid for exactly three years. Once this three-year period ends, the welder cannot renew the certificate through documentation or partial testing. Instead, a complete retest is mandatory to issue a new certificate.

Clause 9.3b offers a second pathway where the certificate is valid for two years. This certificate can be extended for another two years if two welds made during the last six months of validity are tested. For standard welds, these tests must consist of radiographic, ultrasonic, or destructive volumetric testing. For fillet welds, fracture, bend, or macro tests are acceptable instead of volumetric tests.

Clause 9.3c provides the third pathway, which allows the certificate to remain valid indefinitely. To use this route, the welder must continue to work for the same manufacturer. Additionally, the manufacturer must verify the welder's skills every six months to maintain this indefinite validity.

Sweden enforces strict identification requirements for industrial site access. For the mandatory ID06 cards, extended passports are no longer accepted. Workers must present a completely new, valid passport to apply for or use an ID06 card. Additionally, Swedish identity cards issued by the Tax Agency, Skatteverket, are valid for a maximum of five years.

Residence permit cards, known as UT cards, remain valid for the duration of the underlying permit up to a maximum of three years, or five years for long-term residents. Starting June 1, 2026, Sweden extended the validity of EU Blue Cards from two years to four years to reduce administrative burdens. On the same date, Sweden also extended the maximum duration of seasonal work permits from six months to nine months within a twelve-month period.

Norway maintains strict compliance rules for foreign workers during the permit renewal process. Under the Norwegian Immigration Act, a foreign national who applies for a renewal of their residence permit at least one month before its expiration has the right to reside and work in the country on the same terms while the application is being processed. This provision prevents operational disruptions for cross-border employers during administrative waiting periods.

For seasonal employment, Norway enforces a strict cap on the duration of work. Norwegian seasonal work permits can be renewed, but the worker is strictly limited to staying in Norway for a maximum of six months out of any twelve-month period. Employers must track these timelines carefully alongside other Nordic compliance requirements to avoid illegal employment penalties.
